RE: [Biochar] LCA for new Pyrolysis build

Rick,

Good question. The responses will be influenced by the “complexity” (referring to the number and sophistication) of the component parts and capabilities.

A. A traditional earthen mound accomplishes pyrolysis. Maybe call that the “baseline”?

There are three pyrolysis technologies that function in simple designs:

B. The easy cases include cavity kilns (aka flame cap pyrolyzers).
1. A pit in the ground
2. Fabricated sidewalls as in cones, pyramids, etc. with single walls or double walls and supporting stands such as for dumping out the char.
3. Barrel-based RoCC kilns (as is the “H-Frame” design).
4. Larger and more complex examples of the above.

C. Another easy case would be retorts of many designs and sizes.

D. A Third easy case includes the TLUD technology, including biochar-making cookstoves.
1. Natural Draft (TLUD-ND) using “tincanium” or “obtainium” (containers or scrap metal)
2. The Champion ND-TLUD stoves (100,000 in use in West Bengal. An professionally conducted LCA has been recently completed. Summary is that the full carbon footprint is covered by one year of use in impoverished households. (A report for distribution is delayed for lack of time.)
3. ND-TLUD barrels. Well-illustrated by Warm Heart activities in Thailand
4. Forced Air (or Fan-Assisted) FA-TLUD stoves
5. Larger and more complex examples of the above.

But I am sure that Rick is thinking of the pyrolysis devices that have many functions such as making electricity. I ask others to continue this list. What is the LCA on expensive units.
