RE: [biochar] Something to cheer about

Charists,

I read the first article: (nice)
phys.org/news/2019-01-feds-states-biochar-soil-saving-potential.html?fbclid=IwAR27C9xMPE_J9WZ6EYRMaVy8SfIN_dMbNxM3B4n-IMFoB5sE_ThwwRUDHG0

It has a link to another (second) article:
phys.org/news/2018-12-touts-agricultural-environmental-benefits-biochar.html
that says:
The 24-page article, “Policy Support for Biochar: Review and Recommendations,” was co-written by Rice University colleagues Shih Yu “Elsie” Hung, Kenneth Medlock and Caroline Masiello. The publication appears in Global Change Biology Bioenergy. [We should see that 24-page article. It is at:
https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/gcbb.12582 (I have not yet read it, so other should please comment.]

And that second article has a link to another one, which says.
phys.org/news/2017-07-biochar-air-ways.html
*****
The study led by Ghasideh Pourhashem, a postdoctoral fellow at Rice’s Baker Institute for Public Policy, appears in the American Chemical Society journal Environmental Science and Technology.
Pourhashem worked with environmental engineering graduate student Quazi Rasool and postdoc Rui Zhang, Rice Earth scientist Caroline Masiello, energy economist Ken Medlock and environmental scientist Daniel Cohan to show that urban dwellers in the American Midwest and Southwest would gain the greatest benefits in air quality and health from greater use of biochar.
They said the U.S. counties that would stand to save the most in health care costs<phys.org/tags/health+care+costs/> from reduced smog are Will, La Salle and Livingston counties in Illinois; San Joaquin, San Diego, Fresno and Riverside counties in California; Weld County in Colorado; Maricopa County in Arizona; and Fort Bend County in Texas.
**************
Well, I live in the county just south of Livingston Co. in Illinois, and I will need to see documentation as to why that county (and others) were singled out. That was a July 2017 article and I saw nothing in the regional newspaper about that.

Well, that is 3 articles in one on-line journal. Maybe something we should follow up, and give favorable attention to the journal. Can we build upon this?

Michael cc list

Thanks for catching this.

I am about half way through reading (stopping to get some sleep). I strongly recommend reading by all on this list who are at all interested in biochar policy (we used to have a sister list for the policy subset, but too little was happening).

The only void I see so far is that this is devoted to US Policy. I hope policy-interested folk around the world can help us in the US to expand thee discussion. For example, China has taken the global lead in biochar production and use because of their serious problem with burning ag residues in the field. I’ll bet Thailand can help a bit on some policy topics.

Few inserts below.

here – finally – is an article worth cheering about.
[RWL: Agreed.

Now, why not try to get something like this into a publication people read?
[RWL: Dr. Pouhashem has done her job. Now we can urge the popular press to do theirs.
