RE: flame cap kilns are updraft gasifiers

Kelpie,

I am glad you only sent that to me. Joyce is simply incorrect. I am sorry to see that written in a public document. If I had seen that years ago (2014 date), I probably would have said something. I do not remember seeing such a detailed report about the Moxham kiln.

1. TLUD has a descending migratory pyrolytic front. Moxham does not. Moxham has char at the bottom from the initial ignition and keeps filling fuel at the top in the style of flame cap, and augers out char at the bottom.

2. TLUD has intentional controlled air in at the bottom. Moxham does not. But it certainly could leak in some air, which is not typical for flame cap and I doubt that you (nor I) would recommend doing that intentionally for flame cap of smaller sizes. Some leakage might help the Moxham unit, but that would not make it a TLUD device. It would be a “bottom leaking flame cap” char-maker.

3. If the auger is intentionally letting air in the bottom, there will be forge temperatures where the air meets the charcoal that is all around the auger. Not good for the auger.

Moxham is flame cap on steroids. It has it purposes. But not to be called a TLUD gasifier.

I have not heard anything from you about the RoCC kilns. I hope you have seen the info at www.woodgas.com/resources<www.woodgas.com/resources> (still incomplete documentation).

Stay safe from Covid and from fires!!

Subject: flame cap kilns are updraft gasifiers

Hi Paul,
I wonder if you have ever seen the analysis by James Joyce of the Moxham kiln, attached.
James considers the Moxham (a flame cap kiln) to be equivalent to a continuously fed TLUD.
