The IPCC and Biochar – 2018 RE: [biochar] Australian farmers using biochar can now be paid through regenerative agriculture.

Don and all,

Thanks. I followed the link and found what I wanted: The ACTUAL words from the IPCC about Soil Carbon Sequestration (SCS) and Biochar (Section 4.3.7.3). They are in
“Section 4.3.7 Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR). CDR methods refer to a set of techniques for removing CO2 from the atmosphere. In the context of 1.5°C-consistent pathways (Chapter 2), they serve to offset residual emissions and, in most cases, achieve net negative emissions to return to 1.5°C from an overshoot. See Cross-Chapter Box 7 in Chapter 3 for a synthesis of land-based CDR options. Cross-cutting issues and uncertainties are summarized in Table 4.6. “

The IPCC has given us only 399 words (481 if you count the citations) upon which we can hang our hats and our claims. Well, actually only 216 words are about biochar, fewer than the words allowed in an abstract for a conference presentation. Those words are below and in the attached document for ease of future referencing.

But we rejoice!!! Biochar was named by the IPCC !!! We need to build upon those words. We need to cite the ORIGINAL IPCC document!!! And claim our place among the ACKNOWLEDGED methods for CDR.

Biochar is formed by recalcitrant (i.e., very stable) organic carbon obtained from pyrolysis, which, applied to soil, can increase soil carbon sequestration leading to improved soil fertility properties. Looking at the full literature range, the global potential in 2050 lies between 1 and 35 Gt CO2 yr−1 (low agreement, low evidence), but considering limitations in biomass availability and uncertainties due to a lack of large-scale trials of biochar application to agricultural soils under field conditions) lower the 2050 range to 0.3–2 GtCO2 yr−1. This potential is below previous estimates, which additionally consider the displacement of fossil fuels through biochar. Permanence depends on soil type and biochar production temperatures, varying between a few decades and several centuries. Costs are 30– 120 USD tCO2−1 (medium agreement, medium evidence).

Water requirements are low and at full theoretical deployment, up to 65 EJ yr−1 of energy could be generated as a side product. Positive side effects include a favourable effect on nutrients and reduced N2O emissions. However, 40–260 Mha are needed to grow the biomass for biochar for implementation at 0.3 GtCO2-eq yr−1, even though it is also possible to use residues. Biochar is further constrained by the maximum safe holding capacity of soils and the labile nature of carbon sequestrated in plants and soil at higher temperatures.

[This message came from an external source. If suspicious, report to abuse@ilstu.eduabuse@ilstu.edu>] Hi Paul aka Dr TLUD?!

PyCCS best laid out in attached paper by Schmidt et al and also the link to the Biochar Journal article on it here. www.biochar-journal.org/en/ct/94

I understand that Soil Carbon Sequestration, reforestation/afforestation & PyCCS are also separate Negative Emissions technologies (NET’s) in their own right. This now popular term “regenerative agriculture” seems to cover them all.

Chars,

Don

This is excellent news from Australia. The final paragraph says (with my editing as marked);

As Regenerative Agriculture,] [first comma is important separation]

Reforestation and Pyrogenic Carbon Capture & Storage (PyCSS) [PyCCS] producing biochar are now being touted as negative emissions technologies (NET’s) by the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP), [please send specific references to where this touting is found. Is this touting for the COMBINATION of reforestation and PyCCS or for each of them separately? ]

this means both the Soilkee & biochar for animal health methods could deliver more soil carbon credits to Australian farmers.

Australian farmers using biochar can now be paid through regenerative agriculture.

The first soil carbon credits in Australia were issued by the Clean Energy Regulator yesterday to Corporate Carbon for their Grounds Keeping Carbon Project on a farm in Hallora, Victoria which used an invention developed in the Gippsland Region called Soilkee Renovator and mulcher<soilkee.com.au/>.

Soilkee<soilkee.com.au/> combines cultivation, mulching, aeration and mixed species seeding to improve grazing systems and build soil carbon effectively. “Biochar would work very well in this system” said inventor Neils Olsen.

Given the World’s oldest scientific biochar field trial at the NSW DPI Wollongbar site on the Far North Coast of N.S.W. has shown “field-aged biochar enhanced the belowground recovery of new root-derived C (13C) by 20%” (Van Zwieten et al, 2017)<www.anzbi.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/Nature-Climate-Change-Weng-et-al-2017.pdf> , farmers that use biochar made to IBI standards<biochar-international.org/characterizationstandard/> should seriously consider registering a project under the Sequestering carbon in soils in grazing systems method of ERF<www.cleanenergyregulator.gov.au/ERF/Choosing-a-project-type/Opportunities-for-the-land-sector/Vegetation-methods/Sequestering-carbon-in-soil-in-grazing-systems>

“These soil carbon credits actually count towards our Paris targets” say Matthew Warnken, Managing Director of Agriprove<www.agriprove.io/>

Doug Pow, an innovative farmer from Manjimup, Western Australia had an “aha moment” when he was trying to figure out the simplest way to apply biochar to his soil, then it came to him, “we have cows and dung beetles that bury fertiliser all over our farm, I wonder if cows and dung bettles would eat biochar?” Doug said to himself. They did and a paper tabling results was published titled “Feeding Biochar to Cows: An Innovative Solution for Improving Soil Fertility and Farm Productivity” by Joseph et al, 2015<www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S1002016015300473>

As Regenerative Agriculture, Reforestation and Pyrogenic Carbon Capture & Storage (PyCSS) producing biochar are now being touted as negative emissions technologies (NET’s) by the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP), this means both the Soilkee & biochar for animal health methods could deliver more soil carbon credits to Australian farmers.
